Ticket to Ride has long been a firm favorite with me with me now owning a significant number of the expansion map packs. UK Ticket to ride is another one in a long line of expansions all offering a different flavour and gaming experience. This map pack is especially good value as you are getting not only the UK map but also the Pennsylvania map on the reverse. The UK map is clever, there are technology cards that you can buy with multi-coloured locomotive cards this starts your ability to build and move into areas on the board (Initially you can only build on 1-2 routes and only in England itself), the card options are really interesting and pick the right one really can help you gain additional points or advantage over your opponents. There have been a number of people who have discussed whether the 40 point route is broken (some say one person getting that will automatically win as there is no way you can make those points up), but I have been in games where that route has been taken and that person was not the winner of the game. There are some additional cards which can be added to the game which really add some more flavour to the game. Overall, the UK map is excellent and one I would recommend. So, the Pennsylvania map on the reverse is again a completely different feel to all previous ticket to ride map packs. This one plays like normal Ticket to Ride except this time each route you take gives you options to take a share from a company. At the end of the game those shares give you victory points. Again a really good map and one I am happy to have in my collection. Overall, just be mindful that the UK is probably not suitable for new players just because of the technology cards and how it works i think you need an appreciation of the base game first. Also, you need a base game i.e Europe, USA or Marklin to play this as you need the trains in order to play.

As someone who isn't the world's biggest fan of the other 'flavours' of Ticket To Ride I have to admit this map/rule-set has me much more interested in playing the game. < p / > The UK map side almost has a feel of a very very light version of Railways of the World, with the need to upgrade to various technologies in order to maximise your points scoring opportunities. The Pennsylvania side adds shares and although this is far from the cut-throat share trading of games like Acquire or the excellent Chicago Express, it adds a fun element to the game and with some shrewd decision making you can make surprising gains.

To summarise, for people who might have been on the fence about the worth of TTR beyond a gateway game or a bit of light fun, this expansion offers plenty to satisfy the more ‘serious’ gamers in your group.
